The story revolves around Brendan a songwriter/musician from Dublin, taking in the characters of his youth, the harsh conditions that drive him away, and his relationship with his brother who committed suicide. All of this past follows him into the present in New York.
My name is Bernard Smith. I was born in Dublin city Ireland on October 20th 1965. I am one of eleven siblings, three girls and eight boys. After a long and lustrous education in music and theatre, and subsequent career in hardship, I decided to leave Ireland. In the summer of 1996 at the ripe oul’ age of thirty I took up residence in the city of New York. Since then I have had many jobs in all kinds of professions (strictly to keep the wolves from the door), whilst still somehow managing to hold on to my artistic integrity and creativity.
Presently I have a real job as they say. I have been working for the past ten years as a para professional with NYC’s DOE in District 75 special education. I have the great fortune five days a week of hanging out with the most beautiful children, who are the most honest souls you could ever meet.
In 2014 I completed my Associates Degree in Labor Studies under my mentor Brenda Henry-Offor, Ph.D. At this moment I am in the process of completing my Bachelors Degree in Theatre Studies and Dramatic Writing at Empire State College under the tutorage of Professor Lucy Winner, Playwright Lynda Crawford and Professor Ruth Goldberg.
Although my primary art in the past has been music performance and theatre performance, I have recently with the help of my tutors at ESC discovered my playwriting. Since the summer semester of 2015 I have written two plays Brendan Resurrected and Edapus and the Sphinx. I have also written a short movie script “Finding Gregory” and am presently developing a screenplay.
